Discover Rue Daguerre close to Hotel Sophie Germain
At Hotel Sophie Germain we are extremely lucky to be part of a vibrant and historic part of the city, where unique streets like Rue Daguerre are just waiting to be discovered by our guests. Named in memory of Louis Daguerre, inventor of the daguerreotype in 1867, this ancient shopping street boasts one of the oldest street markets in Paris and is a haven for night owls who gather at its friendly cafes and restaurants.
Louis Daguerre (1787-1851) was the father of the modern camera. His invention the daguerreotype was one of the most important breakthroughs in image capture and his memory was honoured in 1867 when Rue Daguerre in the elegant 14th arrondissement was named for him.
A creative and friendly atmosphere
You’ll adore the truly unique atmosphere of Rue Daguerre as you explore its market and shops or simply enjoy a drink at a friendly neighbourhood café. You won’t be the first to come under its spell; Rue Daguerre was a magnet for creative thinkers of the past and painter and sculptor Alexander Calder once lived at Number 22, while fellow sculptor César Baldaccini had a studio just around the corner.
The street was featured in ‘Daguerréotypes’ a 1976 documentary film by Agnès Varda which took a look at the traders of Rue Daguerre. Today, you can shop for fresh local produce at this popular Parisian market where the cheese shops attract clients from all over the city. Pick up fresh Italian pasta at O Sole Mia at Number 44 Rue Daguerre, or sample some of the best French bread you’ll ever taste at artisan bakery Au Moulin de la Verge at Number 82.
After a busy day, relax over dinner at a restaurant or enjoy a cool glass of wine at a Rue Daguerre café before heading back to the elegant and inviting ambience of Hotel Sophie Germain. Rue Daguerre is sure to have brought out your creative side, so why not take a look at the exciting Paul Durand-Ruel exhibition at the Luxembourg museum during your break in the city?
