The month of bargains and an unmissable fashion exhibition
The first month of 2017 is shaping up well when it comes to bargain hunting, thanks to the Winter Sales. But you’ll want to take some time out from your shopping spree to attend a fascinating exhibition. Anatomy of a Collection at the Palais Galliera invites all apparel enthusiasts to explore the history of fashion through the centuries.
Good deals from the capital of shopping
The time for the Winter Sales has finally arrived. From January 11th and throughout the following six weeks you will have a golden opportunity to shop to your heart’s content without giving your bank balance too much of a battering, thanks to the generous markdowns on offer. Aficionados of ready-to-wear and the latest trends can take advantage of this official national sales period to browse the Parisian boutiques in search of the top brand names and smaller designer creations, all available at discounted prices. Shops large and small trim their prices by up to 50%, and even larger reductions are not uncommon as the six weeks draw to a close. Winter Sales are a fun way to discover the capital by combining the pleasure of window shopping with the discovery of department stores and their architectural richness. Check out prestigious emporia such as Galeries Lafayette, Printemps Haussmann or Le Bon Marché and you’ll be amazed by the elegance and sense of history they bear so proudly. These retail temples date back to the 19th century and luxury, fashion and beauty have always been the watchwords, but right now they offer a wealth of opportunities to find high-end items at unbeatable prices. Fashions and accessories are eagerly sought-after, of course, but great bargains can also be found in household goods. The Hotel Sophie Germain Paris, close to the Place Denfert-Rochereau, offers the ideal location from which to take advantage of the sales. From here, for example, you can easily access the Montparnasse district and its Rive Gauche shopping centre.
Wander through the history of fashion
Its great success in 2016 means that the Anatomy of a Collection exhibition at the Palais Galliera has been extended until February 12th. This second part will feature a new and updated display. Drawing on the extensive collection of the fashion museum, the exhibition features a unique collection of clothes dating from the 18th century to the present day. This continuation of the previous exhibition is enriched by some forty garments once worn by such historical figures as Napoleon, Marie Antoinette and the Empress Josephine, and traces the history of fashion through the centuries by showing the clothing of the past used by everyday people as well as illustrious personages, thereby placing everything in context. In addition, the Palais Galliera is currently hosting a tribute in the Salle Carré to stylist Sonia Rykiel. A journey into French heritage and social history, Anatomy of a Collection at the Palais Galliera is a curiosity not to be missed.
